How-to Compare Medicare Advantage Plans
It's important to evaluate plans by more than the carrier name and the monthly premium. We recommend taking inventory of your healthcare needs (e.g., doctor, specialists, medications, finances, etc.) to identify the most important benefits for you. If you need assistance choosing a plan, contact a Medicare AdviserMedicare insurance agent or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
A significant benefit offered by Medicare Advantage, that isn't part of Original Medicare, is an annual Maximum Out-Of-Pocket (MOOP) spending limit. For the 2019 plan year, MOOP is $6,700 for in-network cost sharing. If your in-network cost sharing (e.g., co-payment and co-insurance) exceed $6,700, the plan must pick up all future cost-sharing for the remainder of the year.
This is really good news for people in Albany County with high out-of-pocket costs. In particular because plans can offer a MOOP that's lower than the standard benefit, as low as $3,401. If you typically have high out-of-pocket costs, evaluate plans with a lower MOOP. One of these plans could reduce your overall cost substantially, even if it has a higher monthly premium.
WARNING: If you see a doctor or specialist outside of the plan's network, you will fall under the guidelines of a combined MOOP (e.g., in-network and out of network), which can be up to $10,000.
If you are in a 2019 Medicare Advantage plan, the plan can raise your maximum out-of-pocket spending limit (MOOP) in 2019, however, your covered healthcare expenses cannot exceed $6,700 for in-network cost-sharing.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to read your Annual Notice of Change Letter to see if your MOOP increased. This information will help you determine how much you need to budget in 2019 for in-network Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B charges.
